Natural plant-fibre care

Sisal Rug
Cleaning,
very dry.

Sisal, jute, coir, seagrass — plant fibres that drink water and warp when over-wet. Our 5-step dry-clean protocol lifts soil without soaking the weave — since 1978.

Why sisal needs special care

Plant fibre drinks water,
warps, and browns.

Sisal is spun from the leaves of the agave plant. Jute is stem fibre. Coir is coconut husk. Seagrass is what it sounds like. All four are cellulosic plant fibres and all four share one trait: they swell when wet, shrink when dry, and if over-wet they leach tannins — water-staining the rug from the inside.

Our sisal protocol is a very low-moisture, dry-clean-first hand process. Soil is lifted mechanically before any liquid is applied. Spots are solvent-spot-treated, the rug is hand-wiped with a damp-not-wet soap solution, and then forced-air dried flat within hours.

Very low moisture

Damp, never wet

Sisal cannot be immersion-washed. Every stage of our process uses dry or damp-only application, no soak.

Solvent spot-work

No water circles

Water on sisal leaves brown rings as tannins migrate. We use a dry-solvent for spot removal, applied by hand with a white cotton pad.

Rapid flat dry

Under six hours

If sisal is going to warp it warps on the first night of damp. Forced-air flat drying within hours of cleaning keeps it flat.

The 5-step sisal process

One sisal rug. Five dry stages.

  1. First vacuum pass

Compressed-air beating from the back lifts grit out of the weave; the heaviest dry soil is captured first, before any product touches the rug.

  2. Second vacuum pass

Deep-wand vacuum from the face, working with the grain of the weave until no further soil lifts. Sisal is cleaned roughly 80% mechanically, before anything wet.

  3. Low-moisture compound

A damp-not-wet absorbent compound is broadcast across the surface. It binds with soil and tannins in the fibre without soaking the weave.

  4. Hand-agitate & dwell

The compound is hand-worked into the weave with a soft-bristle brush in the grain direction, then left to dwell so it can fully bind with the soil.

  5. Extract, finish & deliver

The bound compound is fully vacuum-extracted, edges and binding are inspected, the rug is forced-air finished flat under six hours and delivered wrapped flat.

Before & after

Receipts, not promises.

What we do for sisal

Five things on every sisal rug.

  • First vacuum: compressed-air beating from the back to lift the heaviest grit.
  • Second vacuum: deep-wand vacuum from the face, working with the grain.
  • Broadcast a low-moisture absorbent compound to bind soil and tannins.
  • Hand-agitate the compound into the weave with a soft-bristle brush, then dwell.
  • Vacuum-extract the bound compound and forced-air finish flat in under six hours.

Questions

What people usually ask about sisal.

My sisal has a water ring. Can that come out?

In most cases, yes. Water rings are tannin migration from the fibre, not surface dirt. We treat them with a targeted tannin remover applied dry and extracted quickly. Severe tannin stains may leave a faint shadow — we’ll show you the likely result first.

Can you remove a pet urine stain from sisal?

Fresh urine, yes — with a dry-solvent enzymatic. Older urine that’s soaked and dried may leave a permanent discolouration because cellulose fibre holds urea salts. We’ll test a hidden corner first and be honest with you about what’s likely achievable.

Will my sisal shrink or warp after cleaning?

Not with our process. Sisal warps when over-wet and slow-dried; our process uses minimum moisture and forced-air flat drying within six hours. Before-and-after measurements are taken on every rug.

How often should sisal be professionally cleaned?

Every 12 to 18 months depending on traffic. Sisal shows soil less visibly than wool but builds up grit that abrades the fibre — regular cleaning extends its life.

Do you clean jute and seagrass rugs too?

Yes. The protocol for jute is almost identical to sisal. Seagrass is slightly more moisture-tolerant but still dry-clean-preferred. Coir is the most forgiving of the four.

Can you re-bind the edge of my sisal rug?

Yes. We offer cotton, leather, and linen binding in matched tones. See repair services ›

Should I have my sisal rug stain-protected?

Yes — after cleaning we can apply a plant-fibre-safe Scotchgard variant that repels spills without coating the fibre. It adds a few days of use to every spill. Learn more ›
