Deep-pile shag cleaning
Shag Rug
Cleaning,
by extraction.
A shag hides a month of life at the base of the pile. Our 8-step deep-extraction protocol pulls it out, washes the rug clean and dries it flat — since 1978.
Why shag needs special care
A shag is deep enough
to hide a whole week.
Shag and flokati rugs have pile over one inch long — sometimes five inches. Vacuuming only touches the top inch. Everything beneath it — crumbs, dander, pet dander, pollen, and (if you have a dog or a toddler) liquids that soaked to the base — sits on the foundation and builds up.
Standard carpet cleaning floods the pile, and an over-watered shag is a nightmare: it takes a week to dry, smells sour, and the fibres mat together permanently. Our protocol uses multi-stage extraction before and during the wash, plus a forced-air flat dry to get the water out of the base before it can ferment.
Multi-stage extraction
Pull first, wash second
We extract trapped grit and dander at four stages before soap touches the rug. The wash water at the end runs clear on a shag that’s been thoroughly pre-extracted.
Pet-odor specialty
Odor-lock enzymatic
Shag is the #1 rug for pet accidents because the pile traps it all. We enzymatic-treat before the wash, then full-immersion.
Flat forced-air dry
No sour smell
A shag that dries slowly ferments. We use a flat forced-air drying room at 75°F and 35% humidity to clear the base in under 36 hours.
The 8-step shag process
One shag. Eight extraction stages.

-
Pile depth and fibre intake
We measure pile depth, identify the fibre (wool, viscose, polyester or blend), photograph the base and flag any matting, saturation or odor.
-
First pre-dust pass
Compressed-air beating from the back lifts the heaviest crumbs and grit from the base of the pile before any moisture is introduced.
-
Second pre-dust pass
Deep-wand vacuum from the front, working with the lay of the pile. We weigh the trapped debris — a 9×12 shag can yield three pounds.
-
Vibration and enzymatic pre-treat
The rug is vibrated to free the last of the embedded soil, then any pet urine or odor is enzyme-treated at the base of the pile.
-
Full submersion hand wash
Submerged in cold pH-neutral soap and hand-agitated. The deep pile is worked from both sides until the wash water runs grey, then clear.
-
Triple clear-water rinse
Three full fresh-water passes. Soap residue at the base of a shag is the fastest path to a sour smell, so the rug is over-rinsed on purpose.
-
Controlled water extraction
The rug is repeatedly rolled and pressure-extracted until the foundation is no longer wet, then placed face-up to begin the dry phase.
-
Forced-air flat dry & groom
Laid flat in a 75°F, 35%-humidity drying room with forced airflow for under 36 hours. The pile is groomed with a wide-tine hand-rake and delivered fluffed.
Before & after
Receipts, not promises.
A cream wool shag, matted and dulled by daily foot traffic, hand-washed and brush-fluffed back to fresh, bouncy pile with our deep-extraction cold-water protocol.
Free estimate first
Every shag is inspected before work begins.
Pile depth, fibre type and any pet saturation or matting are all documented and quoted in writing before work starts.
What we do for shag
Eight steps for a deep-pile shag.
- Measure pile depth and identify fibre (wool, viscose, polyester, blended).
- Four-pass dry extraction: compressed air from the back, deep-wand vacuum from the front.
- Weigh trapped debris so you can see the difference — often three pounds on a 9×12.
- Enzymatic pre-treat any pet accidents at the base of the pile.
- Full-immersion cold-water wash with pH-neutral soap, hand-agitated.
- Controlled repeat extraction until rinse water runs clear.
- Forced-air flat dry in a 75°F, 35%-humidity drying room (under 36 hours).
- Hand-rake the pile with a wide-tine groom to restore fluff, then deliver rolled loosely.

Questions
What people usually ask about shag.
Can you really remove pet odor from a deep shag?
Yes. The key is a protein-breaking enzymatic pre-treatment applied at the base of the pile, followed by full-immersion rinsing. Surface shampoo never reaches the source of the smell; our process does.
My shag looks matted after washing. Can that be fixed?
Yes. Matting is usually caused by under-extraction during a prior cleaning, leaving soap residue that binds fibres together. We wash, rinse until water runs clear, and hand-rake the pile back to a fluffed state.
How long does shag cleaning take?
Seven to ten business days door-to-door. The slow, controlled forced-air flat dry is the difference between a shag that smells clean and one that smells sour. We never rush it.
Can you clean a flokati or New Zealand wool shag?
Yes. Flokatis are thick-pile wool with a tight foundation — our standard shag protocol handles them, with an extra groom step to restore the curly pile.
My viscose shag is stained and I’ve been told not to wash it. Is that true?
Viscose (bamboo silk, art silk) is the trickiest shag fibre — it yellows if over-wet. We use a reduced-moisture protocol for viscose and hand-dry stage by stage. Yes, it can be cleaned, but it needs specialty handling.
Will shedding get worse after cleaning?
Loose fibres come out during the wash, which can look like shedding for the first week — that’s normal. Actual shedding from the foundation itself will not increase; your rug is not being damaged.
Do you work with pet insurance or cleaning reimbursement?
We provide itemised invoices that most home insurance carriers and property managers accept. Bill pay is handled directly in most Bay Area workflows.
Clients
Said about our shag work.
“A chocolate brown wool shag our Golden Retriever had claimed as his own. I thought it was a write-off. ABC pulled three pounds of debris out of it and it smells like new.”
— Daniel & Hannah T., San Francisco
“Cream flokati with spilled red wine. Photographed it, washed it, groomed it — came back identical to new. Dinner parties can resume.”
— Priya M., Menlo Park
“A viscose shag I’d been told was uncleanable. ABC’s reduced-moisture protocol lifted the stain without yellowing. Craftsmanship, not luck.”
— Lydia H., Piedmont
