How to Properly Store an Oriental or Persian Rug
Whether you choose professional storage or plan to store a rug at home, following the right steps is critical to avoiding permanent damage. Here is what the experts recommend.
1. Always clean before storing. A dirty rug is an invitation for moths. Moth larvae feed on organic matter trapped in the pile — food stains, pet hair, body oils, and dust. Professional cleaning removes all of these, along with moth eggs and larvae that may already be present but invisible to the eye.
2. Apply moth repellent treatment. Even after cleaning, it is wise to apply a moth repellent. At ABC Decorative Rugs, we use a treatment that is safe for all fiber types. Avoid mothballs — they leave a persistent odor and their acidic compounds can damage natural fibers over time.
3. Roll — never fold. Folding places concentrated stress on the foundation fibers, causing permanent creases, cracking, and fiber loss. Always roll the rug tightly and evenly with the pile facing inward. This protects the surface while keeping the roll compact.
4. Wrap in breathable material. Use acid-free, ink-free paper or cotton sheeting. Never use plastic wrap, newspaper, or garbage bags — plastic traps moisture and creates condensation that leads to mold, mildew, and permanent staining. Newspaper ink is acidic and can transfer to the rug.
5. Store in a climate-controlled space. Temperature swings and humidity are a rug’s worst enemy in storage. Attics, garages, and basements are the three worst places you can store a rug. Choose a room or facility with consistent temperature, low humidity, and adequate ventilation.
6. Store flat — never standing on end. Standing a rolled rug on its end warps the foundation and causes uneven surfaces when unrolled. Always lay rugs flat, ideally on a shelf or raised platform.
7. Inspect periodically. For long-term storage, inspect your rug at least once a year. Check for moisture, moths, or any signs of pest activity. If the wrapping has become damp, replace it immediately and allow the rug to air out before rewrapping.

How long can I store my rug with you?
As long as you need. We store rugs from one month to several years. There are no long-term contracts. Many of our clients store rugs during home remodels lasting 3 to 6 months, while others have stored estate collections for well over a year. For long-term storage, we recommend periodic inspections which we can coordinate.
