Custom area rug service
Custom area
rugs, made for
your room.
From a sketch on a napkin to a finished hand-knotted rug on your floor. We consult, design, source the wool or silk, partner with our atelier weavers, and deliver to your door — in the Bay Area for forty-seven years.
How it works
Five stages, four to six months.
01
Consult
A free in-person or video consultation. Room dimensions, color palette, traffic patterns, intended life span, budget range. We listen first, then propose.
02
Design
Hand-drawn or CAD design with three or four iterations. We mock the pattern at scale on the floor in painters’ tape so you can walk it before commitment.
03
Source
New Zealand wool, Indian silk, Tibetan wool-silk blend. We choose by fiber, dye chemistry and intended use. Samples sent to your home before we order yarn.
04
Fabricate
Hand-knotted by partner weavers in Nepal, Pakistan or India. Photo updates from the loom every two weeks. Quality inspected on arrival.
05
Deliver
Wash, finish, deliver to your door. Placed in the room, edges checked, pad fitted. Returned with a certificate of origin, materials and care instructions.
Materials we work in
Four base materials. Endless combinations.
- New Zealand wool. Long-staple, naturally white, takes color cleanly. Highest stain resistance and longest life. Recommended for living rooms and dining rooms.
- Indian or Pakistani silk. For fine, low-traffic decorative pieces. Ten-to-fourteen-thousand knots per square inch on the highest grades. Bedrooms, formal sitting rooms.
- Wool-silk blend. The most common request — wool field with silk highlights for shimmer in the pattern. Tibetan loom is the typical source.
- Jute or sisal. Natural plant fiber for casual rooms, sun-room, second-home use. Not stain-resistant but renewable and inexpensive.
Sizes & shapes
Any dimension, any shape, any room.
Standard sizes
3×5, 5×8, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×18 ft. Stocked sizes ship faster but custom is the same lead time on hand-knotted pieces.
Runners & halls
2×6 to 3×20 ft for hallways, kitchens and stair landings. Made to your exact length so the pattern repeats clean.
Round, oval, octagon
For round breakfast tables, octagon foyers, or under a chandelier. The pattern is designed for the shape, not cropped from a rectangle.
Oversize & palace
Up to 20×30 ft. Loom width is the only practical limit; larger sizes are seamed by hand at the atelier and finished as a single piece.
Lead time & pricing
Plan four to six months.
A typical 8×10 hand-knotted wool rug takes three to four months on the loom and another two weeks to wash, finish and ship. Total lead time is four to six months from design approval. Add two months for silk or wool-silk blends.
Custom rugs are quoted on the design. Wool starts around $25 per square foot in our standard knot density; wool-silk and silk run higher. Larger sizes are proportionally more economical per square foot. Every project is quoted on inspection — see pricing approach ›.
