Why Every Rug Needs a Pad
A rug pad is not optional — it is the single most important investment you can make to protect both your rug and your floor. Here is what a quality custom-cut pad does for you.
Prevents Slipping & Bunching
A rug without a pad slides every time you step on it, creating a tripping hazard and constant frustration. A custom-cut non-slip pad locks your rug in place on hardwood, tile, stone, laminate, and carpet — so it stays flat, smooth, and exactly where you placed it.
Protects Your Floors
Without a pad, rug dyes can transfer to hardwood finishes, grit trapped beneath the rug scratches flooring like sandpaper, and rubber-backed rugs can chemically bond to surfaces. A quality pad creates a protective barrier that keeps your floors pristine.
Extends Rug Life by Decades
Every step on an unpadded rug grinds fibers against the hard floor beneath. Over years, this friction destroys the foundation, thins the pile, and weakens the edges. A pad absorbs that friction — adding decades of life to rugs that cost hundreds or thousands to replace.
Absorbs Sound
Area rugs on hard floors can be noisy underfoot — especially in multi-story homes and apartments. A felt or rubber-felt pad adds a sound-dampening layer that reduces footstep noise and echo, making rooms quieter and more comfortable.
Makes Vacuuming Easier
A padded rug lies flatter and does not shift when you vacuum. The slight elevation also helps vacuum suction pull dirt through the rug rather than trapping it against the floor — keeping both the rug and the floor beneath cleaner.
Adds Cushioning & Comfort
Even thin rugs feel luxuriously plush with the right pad underneath. A felt pad adds a layer of soft cushioning that makes standing, walking, and sitting on your rug noticeably more comfortable — especially on hard surfaces like tile and hardwood.

How to Choose the Right Rug Pad
Material matters more than thickness. The biggest mistake homeowners make is buying a cheap PVC or plastic-mesh pad because it was inexpensive. PVC pads break down within one to two years, leaving a sticky residue on your floor that is extremely difficult to remove. Worse, the chemicals in PVC can permanently discolor hardwood finishes and damage sensitive flooring. Always choose a pad made of natural rubber, synthetic felt, or a combination of both.
Match the pad to your floor. Hardwood, engineered wood, and bamboo floors need a natural rubber and felt pad that grips without adhesive. Tile and stone floors benefit from a thicker felt pad for cushioning and sound absorption. Laminate and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floors require a non-adhesive pad — some rubber compounds can react with LVP finishes. Carpeted floors need a thin, textured-grip pad designed specifically for carpet-on-carpet use.
Size your pad correctly. A rug pad should be approximately one inch smaller than your rug on every side. This keeps the pad completely hidden while allowing the rug’s edges to lay naturally flat on the floor. An oversized pad creates an unsightly visible edge, and an undersized pad leaves the rug’s perimeter unprotected.
Thickness depends on use. A 1/8-inch pad is ideal for low-profile rugs, entryways, and under dining tables where you want chair legs to move easily. A 1/4-inch rubber-felt combination pad is the gold standard for living rooms, bedrooms, and any space where cushioning and comfort matter. Pads thicker than 3/8 inch can cause small rugs to feel unstable and create a tripping edge.
Replace your pad when it wears out. Even the best pads eventually lose their grip and cushion. Signs it is time for a replacement include the rug sliding or bunching again, visible crumbling or flattening of the pad material, or a sticky residue on the floor when you lift the rug. Quality rubber-felt pads typically last 5 to 10 years; cheap PVC pads often fail within 12 to 18 months.

What Our Clients Say
“I have a very strangely sized antique runner that was constantly sliding around on our hardwood floors. The team at ABC Decorative Rugs created a custom-cut pad that fits it down to the fraction of an inch. It provides amazing grip and a nice bit of extra cushion without being too bulky. If you have high-end rugs, don’t settle for the cheap store-bought pads—the custom service here is a game changer for protecting your floors and your investment!”

“The difference between a standard pad and the custom one I received from ABC is night and day. It actually stays in place and doesn’t crumble over time like others I’ve owned. The staff was incredibly helpful in recommending the right thickness for my Silk rug. The turnaround time was fast, and the fit was absolutely perfect. Excellent professional service all around!”
— Seth W., Palo Alto
“I’ve used ABC Decorative Rugs for cleaning in the past, but this was my first time trying their custom rug pads. I am beyond impressed. They cut the pad exactly to the dimensions of my oversized Persian rug, and it has completely stopped the bunching issues we were having. It feels like high-quality material that will last for years. Highly recommend their custom pad service if you want your rugs to feel more luxurious and stay safe.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Rug Pads
Why do I need a rug pad?
A rug pad prevents your rug from slipping and bunching, protects your floor from scratches and dye transfer, absorbs sound, adds cushioning, and significantly extends the life of your rug by reducing friction between the rug and the floor. Even expensive handmade rugs wear out much faster without a proper pad. A custom pad is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your investment.
What size rug pad do I need?
Your pad should be cut approximately one inch shorter than your rug on all sides. For a 9×12 rug, for example, you would need an 8’10” × 11’10” pad. This ensures the pad sits invisibly under the rug while the edges lay flat on the floor. ABC Decorative Rugs custom-cuts every pad to your rug’s exact measurements — you never have to trim anything yourself.
What type of rug pad is best for hardwood floors?
For hardwood floors, we recommend a natural rubber and synthetic felt combination pad. This provides excellent grip without any adhesive that could damage your finish. Avoid PVC, plastic-mesh, and adhesive-backed pads — these can discolor hardwood, leave sticky residue, and cause permanent damage to polyurethane finishes. Our pads are specifically chosen to be safe for all hardwood, engineered wood, and bamboo floors.
Can I use a rug pad on carpet?
Yes. We carry pads specifically designed for area rugs placed on wall-to-wall carpeting. These have a textured underside that grips the carpet below while the smooth top holds your area rug flat — preventing the bunching and wrinkling that happens when you place a rug directly on carpet without a pad.
How much does a custom rug pad cost?
Pricing depends on your rug’s size and the pad material selected. All of our custom pads include precision cutting, free delivery, and installation under your rug. Call (510) 240-7360 with your rug dimensions for an exact quote. We also offer bundle pricing when you combine a rug pad with our cleaning or protection services.
Do you deliver and install the rug pad?
Yes. Free delivery and installation is included with every custom rug pad order throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Our team places the pad beneath your rug and moves furniture as needed to ensure a proper fit. If you are also having your rug cleaned, we install the new pad when we deliver your freshly cleaned rug.
How often should a rug pad be replaced?
Quality rubber-felt rug pads typically last 5 to 10 years depending on foot traffic. Signs it is time for a replacement include the rug sliding or bunching again, visible crumbling or flattening of the pad, or sticky residue on the floor when you lift the rug. Cheap PVC or plastic-mesh pads from big box stores often degrade within 12 to 18 months and should be replaced immediately.
What rug shapes can you cut pads for?
We cut pads for any shape — rectangular, square, round, oval, octagonal, runner, and irregular or custom shapes. Simply provide your rug’s dimensions when you call, or bring your rug to our Newark showroom and we will measure and cut the pad on site. For unusual shapes, we can trace your rug’s outline for a perfect fit.
